Defra Secretary of State Hilary Benn gave the keynote speech at the SDUK annual conference on 6 March 2008. He talked about sustainable development achievements and challenges three years after the publication of the UK Sustainable Development Strategy Securing the Future.

 

>>Regional sustainable development indicators updated

Updated regional versions of 46 of the 68 national sustainable development indicators were published on 31 January 2008 to help provide a perspective of sustainable development in each region.

The regional indicators include new indicators on environmental equality and on wellbeing.

Sustainable development indicators in your pocket 2007The latest edition of Sustainable development indicators in your pocket has been published, giving an updated picture of the UK's environmental, social and economic wellbeing. For the first time the booklet includes some measures of personal wellbeing in the population.

The set of 68 indicators covers issues as diverse as health, housing, jobs, crime, education and the environment and shows  'traffic lights' to signal where things are getting better, worse or staying the same. More than half the official measurements show improvement. Find out more.

Policy background on the new wellbeing measures, a new common understanding of wellbeing for policy, and information about how wellbeing measures and concepts are being used across government can be found here.

The Government’s sustainable development strategy Securing the Future describes a sustainable community as “combing social inclusion, homes, jobs, services, infrastructure and respect for the environment to create places where people will want to live and work now and in the future.”

Helping to make the UK a place of truly sustainable communities are a small army of committed and enthusiastic individuals and organisations. This issue’s Whatever Next? goes on tour to celebrate some of the work being done by them - regionally, locally and at a grassroots level.
