Some pages require extra bits of software so that you can do things like read PDF documents. We do not make these pieces of software (called 'plug-ins'), so you will need to download them from other companies.

All the plug-ins you need are FREE to download and use. You will never have to give any payment or financial details such as your credit card number.

When you download these plug-ins, you will be asked to agree to some terms and conditions with the other company. This does not involve Sustainable Development. The companies you download plugins from must also tell you what they will do with any information you provide.

Some companies may offer you other products, including products that are paid for. Sustainable Development does not endorse any products or plug-ins made by other companies and is not liable for their download or use.

PDF Documents

Portable Document Files (PDFs) allow us to present information in an easily accessed manner that is often the fastest way to present large amounts of information - especially when there are far too many pages to read on-screen at once.

PDFs allow you to download the information we provide onto your own computer, so that you can read or print it later, without having to be online.

In our website, PDFs are indicated by the text PDF included after the link to the associated file. And when the files are really large, we also indicate their size eg. 22 KB or 2.4 MB. We want you to know what type of file you are getting and how big it is before you begin the download!

You will need certain plug-ins in order to read PDF documents - without the right plug-in on your computer, you would not be able to use PDF documents. So, if you want to use PDF and you don't have it already installed on your computer, you will be prompted to install it.

What are 'plug-ins'?

Plug-ins are small bits of software that let you view a document, and are called plug-ins because they 'plug in' to your browser the first time you download them onto your computer, generally installing automatically.

Once you download a plugin, they start themselves whenever they are required - that is, whenever you visit a website designed to be viewed using a particular plug-in.

You may wonder why plug-ins are needed at all and why the main browser types don't automatically include every type of functionality as standard? The answer is that this would simply not be practical. There are hundreds of plug-ins - with new ones created all the time - and a basic package could never include them all and be up-to-date.

Where to get 'plug-ins'?

There are a number of companies that offer plug-ins for readings PDFs - simply do a search on the Internet for one you like: they are generally free!

One of the most commonly used is Adobe Acrobat Reader. This will link directly to the Adobe Acrobat Reader step-by-step istallation guide. Read through the step-by-step guide to download your Adobe Acrobat plug-in.

Sound recordings

We have made a small number of sound recordings available via this website. They are in MP3 format - a common format that should play on the software already available on most computers. In our website, these files are indicated by the text MP3 included after the link to the file. We have indicated both the size of the file and the length of the sound recording.

You may need to save the file to your own computer before it will play correctly - on a Windows PC, you can right-click on the link, select "Save as ..." and choose a location on your computer to save the file.
