Reviewing progress

New publication:

Sustainable development indicators in your pocket 2007

The cover of the 2007 Indicators Booklet

An update of the UK Government's sustainable development indicators

Indicators are integral to the communication of sustainable development.  They help review progress, they highlight where the challenges are, and they help people to understand what sustainable development means globally, nationally, locally and for them as individuals.

A new set of national indicators were outlined in the UK Government Sustainable Development Strategy, Securing the future, launched by the Prime Minister in March 2005.  A baseline assessment of all the indicators, for which data were available, was published in June 2005.

On 27 July 2007 an update of the national indicators was published both as a free pocket booklet Sustainable development indicators in your pocket 2007 and here on the sustainable development website.

Indicators at international, regional and local levels have also been established.

As well as raising awareness the indicators are crucial to policy monitoring and can be used both to monitor specific issues and to create overviews of progress for broad priority areas.

National indicators

There are 68 national indicators supporting the Strategy including measures of everyday concern such as health, housing, jobs, crime, education and our environment. The indicators also support one or more of the four priority areas outlined in the Strategy.

A subset of 20 indicators are also UK Framework Indicators, shared by UK Government and the devolved administrations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The indicators can be used therefore in several ways:

International indicators

Some international data have been compiled for as many of the national indicators as possible. These indicators complement the UK's national indicators and present the UK with other countries.

Regional indicators

Regional versions of the UK Government's indicators of sustainable development were updated and published on 31 January 2008 to help provide a perspective of sustainable development in each region.

Local indicators

Local indicator information is collected by the National Audit Commission, more information can be found on their website www.areaprofiles.audit-commission.gov.uk

Policy monitoring

The national sustainable development indicator set is used to report progress for a Public Sector Agreement (PSA) target owned by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

This section of the website looks at our progress to date and gives a full explanation as to how the assessments have been carried out.
