Sustainable development indicators in your pocket

2006 edition

A free pocket-sized (A6) booklet, Sustainable development indicators in your pocket 2006 (SDIYP), is now available. Copies are available free of charge and in bulk if required. In addition to the pocket-sized version we have produced an A4 version with larger print and graphics, aimed at making the booklet useful as a teaching aid and more accessible to those with poorer eyesight. Regional versions of some of the indicators will be published later in 2005.

Background

In March 2005 the UK Government launched a new Sustainable Development Strategy which sets out a vision of sustainable development through to 2020. As part of the new strategy there is a revised set of 68 indicators, for which SDIYP includes baseline data and assessments.

The indicators cover four priority areas:

Sustainable consumption and production
Climate change and energy
Natural resource protection and environmental enhancement
Sustainable communities

The booklet highlights the breadth of the sustainable development agenda and includes a variety of economic, social and environmental issues of everyday concern including health, housing, jobs, crime, education and our environment, and it is hoped that it will encourage readers to find out more. The booklet should be invaluable as a reference for experts and also raise awareness amongst those less familiar with the concept of sustainable development. It will particularly appeal to teachers and pupils engaged in the study of sustainable development.

2004 edition

The first edition of Sustainable indicators in your pocket was published in 2004. This contains a selection of sustainable development indicators, including many of those from the 1999 sustainable development strategy (some of these have also been included in the 2005 Strategy indicator set)
