Contextual indicator
  • The number of UK households increased by 6.2 million between 1971 and 2006, from 18.7 to 24.9 million. Approximately 60 per cent of the increase was owing to an increase in the number of single person households, from 3.4 million in 1971 (18 per cent of households) to 7.1 million in 2006 (29 per cent of households).
  • In 1971 there were about 0.7 million more dwellings than households, rising to 1.5 million by 2006.
