  • People who are economically inactive (neither employed nor actively seeking work) have represented between 21 and 22 per cent of the working age population since 1992.
  • 7.9 million people were economically inactive in 2007, up from 7.3 million in 1992. Of these 7.9  million, 40 per cent were male and 60 per cent were female.
  • The percentage of men economically inactive rose from 13.5 per cent to 16.3 per cent.  The percentage for women fell from 29.2 per cent to 26.5 per cent.
