  • In 1970 over 100,000 people were killed or seriously injured in road accidents. In 2007 the total was just over 30,700 - a decrease of 69 per cent.
  • The number of children killed or seriously injured in accidents fell from 12,500 in 1979 to 3,100 in 2007 (a drop of 75 per cent).
