Policy monitoring

To promote sustainable development across Government and in the UK and internationally, as measured by:

  • the achievement of positive trends in the Government's headline indicators of sustainable development;
  • the UK's progress towards delivering the World Summit on Sustainable Development commitments, notably in the areas of sustainable consumption and production, chemicals, biodiversity, oceans, fisheries and agriculture; and
  • progress towards internationally agreed commitments to tackle climate change.

Reporting for this Public Service Agreement target is based on the four priority areas of sustainable consumption and production, climate change and energy, protection of our natural sources and enhancing the environment, and creating sustainable communities for a fairer world, as set out in the Strategy.

Progress is summarised by the number of component measures in the UK Government's indicators of sustainable development that are assessed as showing improvement, little or no change, or deterioration, using a traffic light system.

Summary assessments for the total set of indicators and each of the priority areas can be found at the links below.

See Defra's Autumn Performance Report 2005 for the full report and summaries here (PDF 631 KB). Indicator reporting is on pages 46-50 of Chapter 2 and pages 105-109 of Appendix 2.

A detailed explanation of how the indicator measures contribute to the reporting for the Public Service Agreement target is provided in a technical note (see link [PDF 887 KB]).

A summary of the assessments as they contributed to the reporting in the Autumn Performance Report is provided here (PDF 881 KB).
