Land recycling

New dwellings built on previously developed land, 1994 and 2006

  • Land recycling (reusing previously developed land) for housing in 2006 was highest in London where 88 per cent of all new dwellings were built on previously-developed land.
  • The lowest land recycling rate was in the South West, where 58 per cent of all new dwellings were built on previously-developed land.
  • The extent of land recycling increased  in all nine regions between 1994 and 2006. The West Midlands had the largest increase (28 percentage points) closely followed by the East Midlands, the North West and the South East  (27, 26 and 26 percentage points respectively).
  • The lowest increase (5 percentage points) was in London.
