Productivity

Gross Value Added (GVA) per workforce job, all industries, 1996 and 2004

  • Between 1996 and 2004 labour productivity in England increased from £23,800 Gross Value Added per job to £33,800 GVA per job (GVA is a measure of the economic contribution).
  • Greatest productivity was in London (£43,000 GVA per job) and productivity was lowest in the North East, North West and Yorkshire and the Humber  (at around £30,000 GVA per job).
  • Only two regions, London and the South East, had productivity rates above the England average in 2004.
  • London saw the greatest increase in productivity in absolute terms between 1996 and 2004.
  • The North West and Yorkshire and the Humber had the lowest increase in productivity in absolute terms.
