  • Burglary and vehicle theft rates, as recorded by the police, decreased in all regions between 1990 and 2006-7 whereas robbery increased over this period.
  • Burglary, vehicle theft and robbery per 100,000 population were highest in London and lowest in the South West and East of England for burglary and vehicle crime and lowest in the South West and North East for robbery.
  • The largest reduction in burglary and vehicle crime rates over the past 16 years has been in the North East, down by 69 per cent and 71 per cent respectively.
  • Robbery rates have at least doubled in all regions over this period. However, trends have been influenced by counting rule changes in 1998 and, from 2002, the introduction of the National Crime Recording Standard and the inclusion of British Transport Police figures, all of which have tended to increase the number of crimes recorded.
