- In 2003-5, there were 103 deaths per 100,000 people from circulatory disease and 124 deaths from cancer per 100,000 people. Mortality rates from cancer were higher than those from circulatory disease for all nine regions.
- At the regional level, circulatory disease mortality rates fell by between 29 per cent (London) and 36 per cent (North East) between 1996-8 and 2003-5 whereas cancer mortality rates dropped by between 12 per cent (South West) and 18 per cent (North East) over the same period.
- Mortality rates for circulatory disease were 39 per cent higher in Neighbourhood Renewal Fund (NRF) areas (deprived areas) than they were in non-NRF areas in 2003-5, and 18 per cent higher for mortality rates from cancer.
- Suicide rates decreased in all regions except the North East (slight increase) between 1996-8 and 2003-5, with the North West and London greatest improvement (a 13 per cent decrease).
- By region non-NRF areas had lower mortality rates than NRF areas for circulatory disease, cancer and suicides except for suicides in the North East and Yorkshire and the Humber.
