Getting to School

  • 48 per cent of children walked or cycled to school in 2005-6.
  • 31 per cent travelled in private motor vehicles.
  • 20 per cent took public transport.
  • In Yorkshire and the Humber and in the North East 57 per cent of pupils walked or cycled to school, more than in other regions. The lowest proportion was in the South West, where 44 per cent walked or cycled, followed by South East and London, both 45 per cent.  London had the highest proportion travelling to school by public transport (29 per cent).
  • The West Midlands had the highest proportion of children travelling in private motor vehicles, 37 per cent, followed by the South East, 36 per cent, and the South West, 35 per cent.
  • Between 1992-4 and 2005-6, travelling to school by walking or cycling has increased the most in Yorkshire and the Humber (by 10 percentage points), and decreased the most in London (by 6 percentage points).
