Objective: Investment (in modern plant and machinery as well as research and development) is vital to our future prosperity
  • Total investment in real terms grew by 5 per cent relative to GDP between 1990 and 1998, but has since remained relatively stable.
  • Social investment (railways, hospitals, schools) in current prices was around 2.0 per cent of GDP in 1990, falling to 1.7 per cent in 2002.
